It’s a magical day in Astoria, Oregon: sun on the sidewalks, festive chop on the Columbia. I’m tucked in the Blue Scorcher Bakery (try the cardamom rolls), an introvert on glorious overload, trying to steal an hour of quiet time to recharge. Red lapel pins reveal the kindred spirits surrounding me — the $15 buttons our entry into all seven venues — and we exchange knowing smiles and eager reviews of last night’s favorite performances, recommendations of who we’ll catch tonight. We’re two days in the 18th Annual FisherPoets Gathering, and I’m in love with everyone and everything.
Join us tonight from the comfort of your home, thanks to KMUN Coast Community Radio’s live-stream from the Astoria Events Center. The show runs 5:00 to 10:00 PST. (Review the full schedule below; you can catch Joel and me in the 7:00 hour.) Click on “Listen to KMUN/KTCB.” You’ll have a good time, I think.

Tele,
With Tommy I listened to your and Joel’s contributions tonight.… the reception wasn’t that great at this end, Tommy had a hard time quoting for me what either of you were singing or saying! As for myself, my hearing worsening for most of my life is now such that I can hear sounds but the words themselves tend to elude me.…it’s the fine tuning that is lost when the milllions of fine hairs in the cochelea of the ear choose to quite waving like a sea of grass in the wind…and vowels, words are not complete…and that’s with a powerful hearing aid. Without one…it like being under water…soundless everything. Good thing hearing aids exist – and I can still hear the robins singing and the eagles yodeling on high, and Tommy and others… if they speak directly. Joel’s guitar sounded well with the sound of his voice. Your voice was laden it seemed with portent…with cause and effect, I wish I could have heard you…and I wish I could read everything you two said and sang. I think you are both so brave and deserve lots of ovations! I love that photo on Tommy’s facebook page where you and Joel are happily rapping with the other songsters. It must be an adrenaline rush when all goes well with a creative expression like music and singing. I can’t sing to save my life, (so only try when Im very by myself) but get some joy out of just making sounds that agree with what my fingers are doing on the guitar strings — when the compound sounds– voice and twang agree with each other it’s like finding a friend on the same wavelength so to speak and quite fulfilling!
So the new year saw your enabled Nerka taking the seas in stride, that must a joy and gratifying for all the work it was. Hope all goes well with your stretched out lifestyle delivering as well as catching your fish! I have great respect for your and Joel’s passionate care of the fish.…that is what I tried to do all the time at sea, but it was my ideolgy not my Skipper’s beyond the basic need of proper cleaning as well as speed…and I would make faces at the delivery guys when my tenderly laid fish were thrown into their bins like they were old shoes…disgraceful! I hope it turns out to be gratifying and a pleasure as you meet the people who will thrive on your beautiful fish.
Heavens, forgot I’m not on email…gossiping away here and will quit this minute! ‘Cept to thank you for your kind Birthday greetings and your endearing Christmas card celebrating nifty chinook plugs! We do enjoy your communications whenever they show up and wishing you two the very best and fair winds as the months unfold. With fond regards, Mary~ (I am sure Skipper is going to comment on his own!)
